Alexander John Ellis (หรือ Alexander Sharpe) (14 June 1814 - 28 October 1890) คือนักปรัชญาและนักทฤษฏีดนตรีชาวอังกฤษ สิ่งสำคัญด้านดนตรีที่เค้าทำก็คือ การริเริ่มวัดระบบเซมิโทน แตกย่อยออกไปเป็น Cent โดยให้ 1 ออคเตฟ = 1200 เซนต์ (ในระบบ equal temperament 1 เซมิโทน = 100 เซนต์) โดยเผยแพร่ความคิดนี้ลงในหนังสือ ที่เค้าแปลจากงานของ Hermann von Helmholtz นักวิทยาศาสตร์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ ที่ชื่อ On the Sensations of Tone ซึ่งปัจจุบันก็เป็นมาตรฐานที่เราใช้ในการเปรียบเทียบ Tuning System แต่ละแบบโดยใช้ equal temperament system เป็นมาตรฐานกลางครับ
